Some real RnR Grammar today when we were talking about beards and Boom Boom said “I wish I could (grow a beard)”!
He is talking about something that he would like to be able to do NOW, so this is a PRESENT wish, but instead of saying “I wish I can” he said “I wish I could”, as AFTER the word ‘wish’ we use the PAST to express a present wish! Just like we do when we use the second conditional, as it’s not really the past, but as we don’t have any special verbs in English to show a hypothetical tense, we have to be resourceful, so we use the past!
