Episode 20 – How to MAINTAIN friendships

Some useLESS information about how to maintain friendships, stories about weddings, monkeys and lots of other useLESS things in today’s episode… BUT there is some useFUL RnR vocabulary as always just like this:

  1. I’m ok, I can’t moan

  2. We didn’t rehearse that

  3. It made my day

  4. It went over your head

  5. You didn’t give me any prep time

RnR Grammar

The present perfect continuous is always SEXY, so let’s have a look at that. Early on in the show I said to Dan:

“I have been carrying you for the last 27 years”

Some questions for you:

  • When did this action begin? 27 years ago.
  • Is it still in progress? Yes.
  • What am I trying to emphasise in the phrase? The action and the duration of the action.

If your sentence matches the above criteria, then we use the present perfect continuous… UNLESS it is a state verb like ‘love’ – we wouldn’t say “I have been loving you for the last 27 years” but “I have loved you for the last 27 years”.

P.S. I’m not talking about Dan in that example, I’m just giving an example of a state verb!
