P.S. Notice that the phrasal verb above “in case you thought I was making it up” (which means ‘to invent a story / lie) is different from the phrasal verb in today’s show “Dan is trying to make up for it“.
The first one is “make s/t up” whilst the second one is “make up for s/t”.
Very similar in construction, but very different in meaning. That’s the crazy English language for you.
RnR Grammar
As I mention on the podcast, I made a grammatical mistake!
I am a terrible English teacher! What’s even more embarrassing is that Dan told me after the show…. and he knows nothing about grammar!
Anyway, if you didn’t understand what it was, it was very early on in the episode when I said to Dan:
“This episode is very useful for you and I”
In this situation, it should be “you and ME”, because if you were to take away the “you and” part of the sentence, it wouldn’t make sense. Look at the example below to see:
“This episode is very useful for you and I”
“This episode is very useful for I“….?! What type of terrible English is that?!
The type of terrible English spoken by an English teacher is the answer!
Anyway, obviously that is incorrect and it should be:
“This episode is very useful for me” or “This episode is very useful for you and me”
Don’t make the same mistake as me!
