RnR Grammar

We had some serious RnR Grammar today with the future perfect (in the show I said it was the future perfect continuous, but that was wrong – I am quite stupid sometimes!).

It came from this quote by Umberto Eco:

“At the age of 70, those who don’t read will have lived only one life: their own! Those who read will have lived 5000 lives”

We use this to talk about COMPLETED actions by a SPECIFIC time in the FUTURE.

In this example the ‘action’ is ‘living only one life’ or ‘living 5000 lives’ that will be COMPLETED when you read 70 (a specific time in the future).

You will often see words phrases like “by that time” “by 6 o’clock“, as they give the point in time by which the action will be finished. For example “by 3pm, I will have finished writing this article…. I hope!

The construction is always:

WILL HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE

Now that is some seriously sexy stuff.
