Sometimes you don’t need to study the grammar rules of a phrase and it’s best just learning it EXACTLY as it is… for example “I was left scratching my head!” -> there’s no need to analyse the tense (past passive) and why it’s past simple and not present perfect, just use that exact phrase to say “I was confused” and you will not make any mistakes! 😉
