BARACK OBAMA (kind of) talks to RnR English! Listen to the man talk on today’s show, PLUS…. why we LOVE America and why we HATE America and stories that involve my holiday and the US border police! And of course, the the usual RnR vocabulary like:
I’d bet he was America
“Do you know his name?” “No” “That sums you up“
Americans are a bit over the top
“We are still the wealthiest country in the world
They speak in a really posh way
I’m sure my American friends cringed when they heard that (see picture below for a description of this word)
Was he a rent boy?
They should be a bit more humble
Off the top of my head
Hang on
In the podcast, I said “I have an example of an English person being stupid” and Dan the Man responded by saying:
“this had better not be me”
We use ‘had better’ to talk about things that we think people SHOULD do. Another example would be “I had better go home, it’s late”. Obviously in the example from the podcast, Dan the Man is using it in the negative.
It is VERY common to say BUT I notice that not many of my students use it, so try to incorporate it into your discourse to sound more Rock n’ Roll!
ALSO, in the podcast Dan actually says:
“this’d better not be me”
It is NOT CORRECT to write like this, but in spoken form it is nearly ALWAYS contracted, so it can be difficult to hear…. so keep your ears OPEN!
