It’s International Wear No Socks Day today! ? To celebrate, listen to me talk about socks ? Yes, that’s right… BUT there are some interesting facts about feet ?, wearing a tiger on your feet ? and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of RnR vocabulary such as:
Improving my English makes me chuffed
I told Dan to pull his socks up
My feet sweat when I don’t wear any socks
My boss told me off for wearing crazy socks
I hate people that wear odd socks
An odd number is 5, 7, 9, 11 etc.
If you didn’t see a new RnR English episode on a Monday or Thursday you could say ‘hmmm…. that’s odd‘
The most expensive sock in the world is worth £30m
A family of 4, on average, loses 60 socks a year
The sales of socks go through the roof at Christmas
A very small grammar point today, but a very important one! Notice in the RnR vocab above when I say:
“My boss told me off for wearing socks”
Notice that the preposition that comes after it is ‘for’ then we have ‘-ing’.
Obviously I could just say ‘my boss told me off’ and stop, but if you give further information and you want to include the reason, you need to include the preposition ‘for’ + ‘-ing’.
Pay attention to what comes after particular verbs, especially when reading. For example, after ‘look forward to’ you will ALWAYS have ‘-ing’, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to memorise a list with all of these, so the best way is to pay attention when reading and listening – so hopefully it’ll become natural!
