Dan lost the bet, so what else were we going to talk about?! ?? BUT…. we move from toilets and potatoes and talk about the invention of SANDWICHES ?, kicking TEETH, winning the LOTTERY ? aaaaand lots of RnR grammar and vocabulary, such as:
Are you going to peel the potato?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing
I loved gambling
On my brother’s stag party
I’m putting all this money on even
People bet to make up for their losses
Let’s not bring up the potato subject again
Casinos and betting shops lure you in by giving you free stuff
He lost 200 grand
Is that a fact of a myth?
The president won the lottery which must have been a bit of a kick in the teeth
When you haven’t got strong cards but you bet anyway, then you’re bluffing
I don’t know, you’ve put me on the spot
We had some really sexy PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS today when I was talking about the time I thought I was going to win the lottery and I said:
“we had been talking about what to spend the money on for 2 hours”
We use this sexy tense to talk about an action that started in the past and continued until a DIFFERENT action (also in the past). This diagram probably explains it better than me….
Let’s say the ‘x’ is when they made the draw for the lottery, but the time before that was the 2 hours we were speaking. You will often see TIME REFERENCES used with this tense, exactly like in the example where I say ‘for 2 hours’!
