As mentioned very early on in the show (via the great song), to express a PRESENT wish, we put the past simple.

So the ‘formula’ is Subject + WISH + Past Simple.

As mentioned in the song – I wish it was Sunday.

I also gave another example in the show when I said “I wish I had a more interesting guest“.
